So What Is Google Ads?

Google Ads is a online advertising platform which allows you to pay for your ads to be shown on Google’s Search Engine Results and across the Google Display Network. You can use the advertising service to get your ads shown to the right audience at the precise moment they are searching for the products they are looking for, making it a more likely that you are going to drive the relevant traffic to your landing page and increase conversions. You may have heard of “pay per click” (PPC) advertising. This is how Google Ads works. Every time a user clicks on your ad, you pay a fee/bid that you have selected.

Not like SEO (Search Engine Optimisation), where it can take months or even years to work that could help the business, PPC is able to deliver results fast. A well-optimised ads/campaign can quickly appear in the prime position on the Search Engine Results Page, above the organic search results, enabling you to grab the bulk of traffic. Google (paid) ads are marked with a small “ad” label next to the URL in the search engine results page.

How Does Google Ads Work?

Keywords are at the heart of Google Ads. These are words that the target audience search for when looking for something in-particular. One of the first steps when setting up a Google Ads campaign is to create a list of keywords that are relevant to your business/service. For example, a clothing company might select the keywords “Denim Jackets” or “Denim Jeans”. You can then set a limit on how much you want to bid each time your ad is clicked on (pay per click). This just means that you have set budget, you won’t overspend the budget. But also then, your competitors will be bidding on the same keywords as you, so the higher your bid, the more likely your ad will be shown instead of theirs. This when you may have to think out the box and think of long-tail keywords that may cost a lot less but still have the same meaning.

The bid amount is not the only factor Google uses to determine which ad to show for a particular keyword search. Google’s “Ad Rank” metric is also used to determine who wins the that certain ad position, In addition to the bid amount, Ad Rank is based on ad quality its search context and the quality of your ad and the landing that the users will engage with!
